Selma Burke and Dr. William Davies McLelland:
A Tale of Gratitude & Justice
Selma Burke's bust of Dr. William Davies McLelland stands as a symbol of gratitude and a beacon for social justice. Dr. McLelland, a respected local physician in Mooresville, North Carolina, was known for treating both Black and White patients during a time of racial segregation in the South. His dedication to the health and well-being of all residents, regardless of race or socioeconomic status, earned him a place in Burke's heart.
In 1964, Selma Burke reportedly honored Dr. McLelland by creating and donating his bust to the Mooresville Public Library on the condition that the library integrate. When the library failed to fulfill this request promptly, it is said that Burke reclaimed the bust, standing firm in her principles of equality and justice. Many years later, the library finally complied, and the bust was returned, marking a significant step towards progress and reconciliation.
